<p>Thelma watches as the fan spins lazy circles above her. Its slow circuit barely pushes any cool air down to her, but even the anemic breeze on her sweaty face is miraculous. She attempts to adjust herself on the small couch, but her bulky dress makes any adjustment meaningless, so she gives up before she looks ridiculous.
At his desk, pad and paper at the ready, Dr. Mustoff watches her intently. “Comfortable?” he asks.
Thelma nods, sending a fresh bead of sweat from her brow to her jaw.
“Good. Good. So, Thelma, your parents say you’ve been troubled lately, is that correct?”
Thelma continues staring at the fan, watching it turn once…twice…thrice. Her eyes mirror the lazy circles. Her head falls to the side and she gasps. Her eyes fly open and she jerks her head back upright.
“Thelma? What has been bothering you?”
Looking up, but avoiding looking at the fan, she tells him

[[The Knocking (Hidden Passage 1)]]
</p>Thelma has been having nightmares, remembering a time she got locked in the basement with Big Joe, or rather, that Saydee did. Dr. Mustoff comments on never having met a Saydee. Thelma explains that Saydee is her kidnapped sister. She thinks the dream is how it must have been like when Big Joe took Saydee. Of course, now that she is older, she doesn't think Big Joe actually took Saydee, but Big Joe was the family bogeyman, so that's what she associates with Saydee's kidnapping.
[[The Diagnosis]]Thelma talks about the knocking she hears. It reminds her of something from when she was little, something about Saydee being hurt. Something about the knock being dangerous, or a warning of danger. She can't remember. Sometimes it shows up in her nightmares,

He insists that Thelma must just be over stressed, due to lack of sleep. Perhaps it's because of the big day coming up. Thelma doesn't respond to that.
Dr. Mustoff hands her a bottle of pills.

"Have I ever taken pills like these before?"
"Not to my knowledge, no," Mustoff replies.
Thelma takes the bottle, but is wary of them. She has the strongest feeling that the Doctor has just lied to her.

<!--Add to total knowledge variable--> Thelma gets up from the chaise, dons her bonnet, and starts to leave. Doctor Mustoff takes her hand, tells her he loves her, and can't wait to see her in white in a few days. Thelma leaves, getting on a horse drawn cart and leaving the town. She sees pumpkins and ghouls, devilish creatures, all the way back to the settlement.
The town gives way to open fields and untouched forests. There is a dirt path leading into the woods, just beyond a bench covered by metal and glass with a big rectangular sign by it. Thelma has heard this place called the "bus stop," but she doesn't fully understand what that means.The buggy takes the dirt path into the woods, leaving behind the shelter of glass and metal and all other traces of modern civilization.
The forest thins the deeper the buggy goes, eventually giving way to a clearing of stumps, and then just a clearing. Some cabins huddle near the center of the clearing, while the rest is filled with harvest fields and livestock feeding ranges. It isn't a massive operation, but it is obviously run well. Boys and men work in the fields, women sit on porches chatting and snapping peas, and children laugh and run behind and around the cabins.
